SuperNova - Domaine Danjou Banessy, Espira, Roussillon, France
The Banessy estate has always been biodynamic and the soil their old vines are planted in has never seen a drop of chemicals. They are as non-interventionalist as possible in the cellar letting the grapes really dictate the end-product. Only 800 bottles of SuperNova have been produced from Muscat d’Alexandre. On the nose, Normandy cider with hints of dry sherry and floral notes. The palate of almonds, violets and jasmine tea and notes reminiscent of kombucha and crystalised fruit. This wine is as complex as it is rare.

Riesling - Bascand Estate, Waipara Springs, Canterbury, New Zealand, 2016
This is a powerful, fruit forward wine with aromas of lemon, lime, mandarin flower, orange sherbet, and a slightly honeyed character. On the palate, ample acidity balances the residual sugar. The wine is juicy and full in the mouth and leaves a lingering and persistent finish. Don’t let the residual sugar put you off – this Riesling has a savoury on-the-lees yeastiness which gives it body and depth.

Viognier - “Petit Condrieu”, Xavier Gerard, I.G.P Collines Rhodaniennes, Rhone Valley, France, 2016
The majority of grapes come from just outside Condrieu from Xavier’s vineyard which was purchased when he was just 20 years old. Xavier himself is fast becoming a prominent and well-respected producer and he is letting his wines form this reputation for him. This wine is a stern and serious viognier with stone, citrus rind and aniseed all providing a balancing nutty bitterness to savoury apricot fruits and spears of ginger. Rich in texture and powerful on the palate – beautiful by itself or enhanced with food.

Negroamaro - Feudi di Guagnano, ‘Terramare’, Salento, Puglia, Italy
Negroamaro is an unusual grape but offers a lot, it is recorded dating back 1500 years in parts of Italy and the Italians did very well to keep it to themselves for so long. Exceptional value for money, this wine is well produced with soft berries and a slightly smoky, peppery finish.

Faugeres - Domaine des Trinites, A.O.C Faugeres, Languedoc, France
Winemaker Simon Coulshaw is fondly known as a ‘terroirist’ in the wine world as he is a winemaker that’s as passionate about his soil and as little intervention as possible, as he is with his vines. This Blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan is full of soft black fruits and spices. On the nose it is herbal, with a peppery spiced bouquet which is followed by youthful cherries and a supple mineral character, derived from its schist soils.

Barolo - Comm. G.B.Burlotto, Verduno, D.O.C.G, Piedmont, Italy, 2014
Perhaps this style of Barolo was always the way Nebbiolo should have been, but it is becoming more and more popular amongst wine drinkers, also scoring some very fine, high 90s from critics as well. Almost pinot like flavour profiles of dark cherries, black plums, floral notes and touches of orange peel and earthy spice; but with a different fruit weight and tannin structure which is suave with focussed, driven acidity and fleck of minerality. We found this wine even prefers to be served from the bottle, slowly allowing the air to open it up gently. Wonderful, wonderful, Nebbiolo at its very best.

The Red - Meerlust Estate, Stellenbosch, South Africa, 2014
This classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot really offers a lot. Dark tea, mulled spice notes and blackberry come through on the palate. With a nose of tar and tobacco, you might think this would be overly heavy and very tannic, however, it delivers a smooth, well rounded experience with good balance.

Blanquette de Limoux - Château Rives-Blanques, A.O.P, Limoux, France
Blanquette de Limoux is the first sparkling wine in the world. It is believed that in 1531 Benedictine monks from the abbey in Saint-Hilaire stumbled across the secret to making their wine sparkle. Made with 100% Mauzac grape varietal, this Blanquette is crisp, clean and refreshing. There is a real juicy zestiness with flavours of apples, pears and brioche and earthy undertones of pear and white fruit. This Blanquette spends at least one year on the lees after its second fermentation in the bottle.
